It's springtime in Grand Forks, at least for the moment. With spring new threats come to our fair community. The piles of snow that dot the landscape slowly become less controlled and begin to transform into different forms. While it's nice to see little patches of brown earth and pavement, the bigger worry is where all this snow will go.
To defend us from the nefarious snow, the trucks have begun to roll through Grand Forks with their cargos of clay.
They gather at our fortification walls: not far from some recent construction which preserved some clear evidence for what could happen if our fortifications do not hold.
Fortunately, the folks here in North Dakota have some experience with using the earth to protect habitation centers. Our predecessors to the west, the Mandan, tended to build their villages on high ground and protect them with ditches.
The Grand Forks Herald scooped me on this. I opened my favorite local paper's web page this morning, and there was not only a better discussion of this, but also better photos.
